Mission Trip to Rotifunkay 2007
On the 29 December 2007 The Go Evangelistic and Compassion
Ministry made its way to a town called Rotifunk with the aim of proclaiming the
gospel of Jesus Christ and launching the ministry in the town.
Profile: Rotifunkay is a town 50 miles away from the
capital Freetown. It is situated along the road leading to moyamba town. It is
bounded by rivers, estuaries and mountains.
The early missionaries came to this town on boat through the
Atlantic Ocean. It is a place that received the gospel of Jesus Christ when the
first missionaries came to Sierra Leone.
The first Missionary house was erected in1877 and the first
church was erected in 1883 by the WAM of the UBC missionaries.
But these people who comprised of Loko, s, Sherbro, and
Temene were so reluctant to accepting the gospel of Jesus Christ which lead
them to kill more than 10 missionaries in colonial times. The first
missionaries were martyred in 3 may 1898.
Ever since the spread of Christianity became slow in this
community. The old Methodist church which existed in this community for over
100 years is the only existing church present.
During the ten years of rebel war in the country which led
to the killing of thousands of people the whole township was burnt down and the
people abandoned the town for more the than 6 years. Every thing was destroyed
including the only hospital present in the town.
Now life is regaining in the town after the end of the war.
What is now seen is the existence of mosques and no churches. The people are now
engaged to witchcraft, oculttism, secret society, and African traditional
religion.
It is sad to see that people abandon the gospel in this
community. But thank God for our ministry which made its way this December to
the township to revive the people and proclaim the gospel to them.
Some people say the cause of the downfall of the town is due
to the missionaries that were killed and that their blood is still crying.
But we thank god for this new era as we preached the gospel
in our crusades a lot of people made up their minds to accept Christ as their
personal saviour. We were able to launched the ministry in the town and a
village 5 miles away from Rotifunk called Gberembu were we held another
crusade. We now thank God as we have two new locations in that part of the
country. We are sure that God is in control and he will surely make a way to
save these people.
